Being from California big-bright-color has always been how I’ve longed to decorate my apartments (that and the rebelliousness that springs from pesky landlords not allowing me to paint my walls anything other than an antique white). A few years ago, I went whole-hog with color, painting every surface and every room a different theme. Frida Kahlo (kitchen) meets an old Soviet style propaganda poster (living room) meets a Paris drawing room (living room again) meets a Catholic rectory (bathroom) with a dash of Brazil (think bedroom). I never thought I’d get to this point but all I think about these days are different shades of white.
More after the jump...
A neutral is the new orange fluorescent in my book. I feel like it’s time to cast off the broad strokes and revel in subtlety. I went digging in my library and found these pics of Lee Radziwill’s beach house on the East coast in the seventies. This is exactly what I'm going for; white with white plus more white along with desaturated accent colors. In Lee's house (I hope we're on good enough terms that I can call her Lee, I have had the book for like a year)the whole interior serves as a frame for the sea. I'm in Silver Lake so my aparment will serve as a frame for my neighbor's yard!
Here's the book: Lee Radziwill’s “Happy Times”
