Homemade Grenadine

grenadine

Classic Cocktails

Many old fashioned and classic cocktails call for grenadine. Grenadine was once a delicious pomegranate based syrup that is now sadly nothing but colored sugar water. I hate fake substitutes in ingredients so making my own made tons of sense.

I recently received a case of POM Wonderful Pomegranate juice from the fine people at POM, and I've been itching to make something fun with it. Grenadine seemed perfect, especially since the weather has been warming up which usually means switching from wine to drinking cocktails! Grenadine can be used to make a number of classic cocktails but is probably most widely known in a Tequila Sunrise.

Grenadine recipe in second part of post

Ingredients

4 cups POM Wonderful Pomegranate juice
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice

Directions

Place all of the ingredients in a sauce pan. Bring juice to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for 45 minutes, or until it reduces by half. Let cool and place in a glass jar and refrigerate until ready to use. Use the Grenadine to make Pomegranate Mimosas, Singapore Slings, or a Tequila Sunrise.

Thanks for enlightening me, I've always figured that grenadine is a cherry syrup. Will try this. Great job on the site, I also enjoy Bloggers Unite!

Apparently I've never had real grenadine, but maybe you can try pomegranate molasses too.

@Jessica - pomegranate molasses sounds delicious...how would you use it?

I've used pomegranate molasses in cooking but it's basically just a pomegranate syrup so I think you could use it like you use your home-made grenadine....it's funny cause my friend Carol and I were just talking about making a drink with pomegranate molasses (not knowing that pomegranate was the original grenadine flavor).

I've been wanting to make my own grenadine for ages. I hate the artificial substitutes too but I do like me a Tequila Sunrise! I guess I just HAVE to make some now. Thanks for twisting my arm Danny ;)

Wow, this stuff is amazing. I accidentally used the POM Pomegranate Cherry, and that actually worked really well too. Thanks for the great recipe.

Thanks for sharing the recipe. Just wondering how long can I keep this homemade grenadine in the fridge?

I just made this recipe and it came out OK. Some easy improvements:
Use 1cup of sugar. 1/2c does not get it syrup-y enough.
I would also recommend using the juice of 1 lemon (fresh is ALWAYS better than bottled lemon juice)
and finally, you should combine the juices and reduce to half, and THEN slowly add the sugar over extremely low heat. Once all the sugar is completely dissolved remove from heat. Pour into a heat safe (mason or canning) jar and store in your fridge.
This will result in a much more syrup like texture. Use sparingly at 1st.

Rose's Grenadine is expensive and made with slimy corn syrup. I've had some decent grenadine made in Mexico. At least they use cane sugar. This recipe looks interesting so will give it a try.

Thank you! I am allergic to corn and soy so this was a life saver!

I just made some grenadine using POM Wonderful too but I didn't cook it down; simply substituted the juice for water in a typical simple syrup recipe. To store it I cleaned out a bottle of Rose's that I bet I've had for...hmm, an unbelievable number of years!

The thing about this preparation is that I don't know how long it will last; even in the fridge so I added just a touch of vodka which I'm hoping will preserve it a bit longer. Obviously not for Shirley Temples unless the drinker is older!

Not just a better end result than Rose's but a fabulous flavor too right?
